Searches for OH masers in the circumstellar envelopes of red giant irregular variable stars
Irregular variables of type Lb share many characteristics withasymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars such as Miras and semiregulars(SRs). Despite their large number, irregulars are poorly understood.Using the large Nançay radio telescope, we searched for 18-cm OHmaser emission from these stars. We selected two samples of Lbs thatpresent a noticeable circumstellar envelope. In the first one, 44high-latitude objects with infrared colours of dusty mass-losing starswere observed in a wide-bandwidth velocity-search mode. In addition, 16objects (including six from the first sample), in which othercircumstellar molecular lines had recently been found, were observedwith higher resolution and sensitivity. We did not detect any new OHmaser emission from these samples down to 3σ sensitivity limitsranging from 30 to 200 mJy. We derived upper limits for the efficiencyof a typical pump using far-infrared photons. When compared with knownOH masers in AGB stars, we show that a significant gap is leftunexplored below the threshold that we determined for Lbs. Lowerefficiencies exist in some OH Miras and in the OH SRs. We cannot discardthe possibility of faint OH emission from certain Lbs, based on the sameprocesses as encountered in those sources. We briefly discuss physicalconditions allowing OH emission in the envelope, and the evolutionarystage of objects classified as Lb variables with respect to the AGB.

Technetium and the third dredge up in AGB stars. I. Field stars
We searched for Tc in a sample of long period variables selected bystellar luminosity derived from Hipparcos parallaxes. Tc, as an unstables-process element, is a good indicator for the evolutionary status ofstars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). In this paper we study theoccurrence of Tc as a function of luminosity to provide constraints onthe minimum luminosity for the third dredge up as estimated from recentstellar evolution models.A large number of AGB stars above the estimated theoretical limit forthe third dredge up are found not to show Tc. We confirm previousfindings that only a small fraction of the semiregular variables show Tclines in their spectra. Contrary to earlier results by Little et al.(\cite{llmb87}) we find also a significant number of Miras without Tc.The presence and absence of Tc is discussed in relation to the massdistribution of AGB stars. We find that a large fraction of the stars ofour sample must have current masses of less than 1.5 Msun .Combining our findings with stellar evolution scenarios we conclude thatthe fraction of time a star is observed as a SRV or a Mira is dependenton its mass.Partly based on observations collected at the European SouthernObservatory, Paranal, Chile (ESO-Programme 65.L-0317(A)).

Hipparcos red stars in the HpV_T2 and V I_C systems
For Hipparcos M, S, and C spectral type stars, we provide calibratedinstantaneous (epoch) Cousins V - I color indices using newly derivedHpV_T2 photometry. Three new sets of ground-based Cousins V I data havebeen obtained for more than 170 carbon and red M giants. These datasetsin combination with the published sources of V I photometry served toobtain the calibration curves linking Hipparcos/Tycho Hp-V_T2 with theCousins V - I index. In total, 321 carbon stars and 4464 M- and S-typestars have new V - I indices. The standard error of the mean V - I isabout 0.1 mag or better down to Hp~9 although it deteriorates rapidly atfainter magnitudes. These V - I indices can be used to verify thepublished Hipparcos V - I color indices. Thus, we have identified ahandful of new cases where, instead of the real target, a random fieldstar has been observed. A considerable fraction of the DMSA/C and DMSA/Vsolutions for red stars appear not to be warranted. Long period variable stars: galactic populations and infrared luminosity calibrations
In this paper HIPPARCOS astrometric and kinematic data are used tocalibrate both infrared luminosities and kinematical parameters of LongPeriod Variable stars (LPVs). Individual absolute K and IRAS 12 and 25luminosities of 800 LPVs are determined and made available in electronicform. The estimated mean kinematics is analyzed in terms of galacticpopulations. LPVs are found to belong to galactic populations rangingfrom the thin disk to the extended disk. An age range and a lower limitof the initial mass is given for stars of each population. A differenceof 1.3 mag in K for the upper limit of the Asymptotic Giant Branch isfound between the disk and old disk galactic populations, confirming itsdependence on the mass in the main sequence. LPVs with a thin envelopeare distinguished using the estimated mean IRAS luminosities. The levelof attraction (in the classification sense) of each group for the usualclassifying parameters of LPVs (variability and spectral types) isexamined. Stars with the Largest Hipparcos Photometric Amplitudes
A list of the 2027 stars that have the largest photometric amplitudes inHipparcos Photometry shows that most variable stars are all Miras. Thepercentage of variable types change as a function of amplitude. Thiscompilation should also be of value to photometrists looking forrelatively unstudied, but large amplitude stars.

Classification and Identification of IRAS Sources with Low-Resolution Spectra
IRAS low-resolution spectra were extracted for 11,224 IRAS sources.These spectra were classified into astrophysical classes, based on thepresence of emission and absorption features and on the shape of thecontinuum. Counterparts of these IRAS sources in existing optical andinfrared catalogs are identified, and their optical spectral types arelisted if they are known. The correlations between thephotospheric/optical and circumstellar/infrared classification arediscussed.

H_2_O maser emission from irregular variables.
We have performed a search for the 22 GHz water maser line among 72optically identified irregular and semiregular red variables. Newdetections were made of five stars, while only four of nine objectspreviously known as maser sources were redetected. The probability forthe detection of H_2_O maser emission increases with V light amplitude,and with H-K and K-[12] colours just as in regular Mira and semiregularvariables of SRa- and SRb-types. The detection rate of water masers isabout 25% for nearby Lb objects (D<400 pc) in the sample, comparableto that observed in the SRa and SRb stars. No masers were detected inobjects with mass loss rates <=4x10^-8^Msun_/yr. Maserluminosities are 10^41^-10^43^photons/s similar to that of the bluestMiras and typical SRa and SRb stars showing water maser emission. Acomparison of our data on irregular stars with those previously obtainedon SRa and SRb variables suggests that most radio and infraredproperties are indistinguishable among both classes of objects.

Irregular variables of type Lb. New JHKL'M-photometry for 160 stars.
This paper presents new near infrared observations of 160 Irregularvariables of type Lb in the JHKL'M filter bands. These measurements aresupplemented by data for additional 56 stars taken from the literature.In total 220 datasets are available because of some multipleobservations. From our sample, 216 stars have near infrared (NIR)photometry now. Our sample of visually bright Lb-variables displays verysimilar infrared properties when compared with SRa- and SRb-variables.Derived from NIR-two colour diagrams the oxygen-rich Lbs seem to haveintermediate atmospheric conditions between Miras and normal giants.There may be a sligthly larger "contamination" with non AGB-giants thanin the case of the semiregulars. Using only our IR-colours the S- andthe Carbon-stars among the Lbs again are undistinguishable fromSR-variables of the same chemistry.

Mass-losing stars in the South Galactic CAP
Observations are presented for 162 late-type stars in the South GalacticCap (b<-30 deg) which were selected on the basisof their IRAS 25/12-μm flux ratios as high-mass-loss candidates. JHKLphotometry (over 1100 observations) was obtained for all of the stars,BV(RI)_C photometry for 78 of them and optical spectra for 51. 154 ofthese stars are non-Mira M or S stars, of which many, and possibly all,are semi-regular variables. Of the remaining eight IRAS objects, threeare T Tauri stars, three are interacting binaries and two are carbonstars. A few of the M giants and both of the carbon stars havecircumstellar envelopes of the type more normally associated with Miravariables. These include two 1612-MHz OH maser sources. It is suggestedthat such stars may have been Miras in the recent past, but arecurrently out of the instability strip owing to a recently experiencedhelium-shell flash. Alternatively, some of them could be binary stars,but there is as yet no evidence for the second star. The near-infraredcolours of the M giants are compared with those of similar stars in theBulge. They are similar to those of the inner Bulge and unlike thosefound in either the outer Bulge or the globular clusters. The kinematicsand Galactic distribution of the M giants indicate that they areprobably from a mixed population and that they could be associated withMiras with a range of periods. A comparison of the observed colours withthose derived from models indicates a range of metallicity with the bulkof stars slightly more metal-rich than the Sun. It also revealssignificant numbers of stars with colours outside the predicted range,possible due to the effects of circumstellar reddening or toinadequacies in the models. The most metal-rich examples of the M starshave high mass-loss rates for non-Miras (~10^-6 M_solar yr^-1) and thereare far fewer of them outside than inside the solar circle. This may bedue to a metallicity gradient. These stars have a scaleheight of morethan 500 pc. The two carbon stars have unusual colours and detachedshells. One of them, R Scl, is shown to vary with a period of 379dsuperimposed on a possible second period of about 2300d. The othercarbon star, which is more distant and previously unknown, may also havedouble-period variations.

Oxygen-rich semiregular and irregular variables
All the known oxygen-rich semiregulars and irregulars of spectralclasses K and M with the absolute value of B not greater than 30 deg,Delta(m) not less than 0.5 mag, and, for the semiregulars, periods inthe range of 50 to 400 d are compiled. On the basis of theirdistributions on the sky and their brightnesses in the K band at 2.2microns, it is argued that the semiregulars with a period of 300-400 dappear to belong to the same population as the 'thin disk' Miras in thesame period range and have an exponential scale height from the Galacticplane of about 250 pc. The semiregulars with a period range of 200 to300 d belong to the population of the 'thick disk' Miras with anexponential scale height from the Galactic plane of about 500 pc. On thebasis of the similarities of their space distributions and the presenceof Tc in their atmospheres, and using the pulsational mode calculationsby Ostlie and Cox (1986), it is suggested that the semiregulars with aperiod range of 100-150 d are first and second overtone pulsations ofthe same population of AGB stars as the Miras in their fundamentalpulsational mode with periods longer than 300 d.

OH/IR star color mimics
IR color criteria are used to select potential OH/IR stars from the IRASPoint Source Catalog. These OH/IR star color mimics, despite oftenhaving thick and demonstrably O-rich dust shells to shield theirmolecules against interstellar UV, have no 1612 MHz masers. The mostlikely reason for this is that these stars have degenerate companions,which collect an accretion disk from the red giant wind, which in turnprovides them with a local source of UV to dissociate molecules fromwithin their dust shells. In some cases this self-generated UV issufficient to excise all molecules from a shell, as happens withsymbiotic novae; in some cases it merely reduces their number and theability of a shell to support a maser. It is suggested that D-typesymbiotic stars can be identified among sources with thick opaque dustshells by a persistent absence of appropriate masers: these are theOH/IR color mimics.

A survey for infrared excesses among high galactic latitude SAO stars
This project involves extending the previous analysis of infraredexcesses among a volume-limited sample of 134 nearby A-K main-sequencestars to a magnitude-limited sample of stars, culled from the SAOCatalog, with excesses determined from the IRAS Point Source Catalogflux density ratios. This new sample includes 5706 B-M type stars, 379of which have infrared excesses. The objective involved use of astatistically complete survey of objects in a standard catalog in orderto assess the frequency with which different physical processes canaffect the infrared output of stars. These processes include, but arenot limited to, orbiting cold particle clouds and the onset of rapidmass loss. It is concluded that cold disks are consistent with theinfrared excesses found among A-G dwarfs and G-K giants in the sample.

New OH/IR stars from color-selected IRAS sources. II - an unbiased 1612 MHz survey
Results are reported from the Arecibo 1612-MHz survey of color-selectedIRAS sources. This paper examines 1294 sources, to detect 86, 79 of themnew detections, all with 25-micron fluxes greater than 2 Jy. The specialfeature of this work is its coverage of sources with high absolute valueof b(II), so the 1612-MHz characteristics of stars with small progenitormasses are determined. This provides direct observational evidence thatradiation pressure acting on dust grains influences mass loss from redgiants.

Oxygen isotopic abundances in evolved stars. III - 26 carbon stars
Oxygen isotope ratios have been measured in 21 ordinary N-type carbonstars and in five 13C-rich J-type stars. The ratios in theordinary N-type stars are 550 ≤ 16O/17O ≤4100 and 700 ≤ 16O/18O ≤ 2400. These ratiosare much higher than expected and are extremely difficult to explain interms of present theories of stellar evolution. The J-type stars exhibitratios 350 ≤ 16O/17O ≤ 850,16O/18O ratios being very uncertain. Together withnitrogen abundances measured by Lambert et al., these ratios precludethe envelope burning (hot-bottom convection) hypothesis which has beenproposed for these stars.

IRAS catalogues and atlases - Atlas of low-resolution spectra
Plots of all 5425 spectra in the IRAS catalogue of low-resolutionspectra are presented. The catalogue contains the average spectra ofmost IRAS poiont sources with 12 micron flux densities above 10 Jy.
